South Boston's restaurant scene has been busy in 2026, with a mix of new concepts, second locations, expansions and a few changes to familiar storefronts.
Many of the operators are familiar names around the neighborhood and city. Petula's is expanding next door, Piccolino's founder is a South Boston resident, and Broadway Restaurant Group opened Dalia on West Broadway. Others are established restaurants from elsewhere in Boston moving into Southie, including Brookline Lunch and Sunny Girl.
Petula's is Expanding
Petula's at 81 L Street is adding space next door, with plans for more seating, a second bar and additional room for larger events. Owner Rachel Titcomb confirmed the expansion in September; construction is underway, but there is no announced opening date yet.
Brookline Lunch on L Street
The former L Street Diner & Pizzeria space at 108 L Street now has a new tenant: Brookline Lunch, the longtime Cambridge restaurant that opened in Central Square in 1989. The South Boston location opened in September as the family's second location, bringing its breakfast and lunch menu (including its well-known baklava pancakes!) to the neighborhood.
Piccolino is Coming to Dorchester Street
At 236 Dorchester Street, South Boston resident Emily Swaine is building Piccolino, a coffee and aperitivo bar inspired by her time living in Italy. The plan is a day-to-night neighborhood spot, with coffee in the morning and drinks and small plates later in the day. The restaurant is still listed as coming soon, with the buildout underway and no opening date announced.
Mother's East at Andrew Square
Mother's East Tavern opened at 289 Dorchester Street in May from husband-and-wife team Laura Fryer and Alec Barber, with chef David Quinlan leading the kitchen. The tavern focuses on classic pub food and New England ingredients and now serves lunch on Saturdays and Sundays in addition to its weekday and weekend evening hours.
Dalia Keeps Expanding the West Broadway Scene
Dalia opened at 429 West Broadway in April as a Spanish-inspired, wood-fired restaurant from chef Nicholas Dixon and Broadway Restaurant Group, the team behind several established South Boston restaurants. This summer, Dalia added weekend brunch and opened Leopard Lounge, a 75-seat downstairs cocktail and dining space. The restaurant has also received national attention: Dalia was included on The New York Times' 2026 list of 50 favorite restaurants in America.
Established Names Are Moving In
A few other openings add to the mix. Sunny Girl, the North End breakfast and sandwich shop, is opening a second location at 479 West Broadway, with an expanded menu that will extend into lunch, dinner and late-night service. No confirmed opening date has been announced. Common Craft opened at 85 Damrell Street in March, bringing a South Boston location of the Burlington concept to the South Standard building. James Beard Award-winning chef Tony Messina is a partner in the restaurant, which focuses on seasonal cooking and New England producers. And not every restaurant story this year has been about opening: Fresh Boston's South Boston location at 232 Old Colony Avenue temporarily closed in August after nearly four years.
